Abstract

752,903. Agglomerating ores. WARMESTELLE STEINE UND ERDEN GES. Feb. 16, 1954 [Feb. 21, 1953 ; March 12, 1953; April 29, 1953 ; May 22, 1953; May 22, 1953; Nov. 10, 1953], No. 4550/54. Class 82(1). [Also in Groups XII and XIII] Apparatus for heat treating e.g. drying, calcining, burning or sintering bulk material, e.g. chalk, dolomite, magnesite or cement moving in countercurrent to hot gases, comprises an annular shaft furnace 2 disposed above a rotary hopper 8 carrying an annular discharge table 10, and feeding a rotary furnace 24, Fig. 2, by a shoot 23, hot gases from the rotary furnace passing in turn through the shoot 23, the hopper 8, around the table 10, up the annular shaft 2, and out by an offtake 15. The shaft 2, which is supported by brackets 5 in members 6 forming part of a framework 28, makes a sand or water seal 22 with the hopper 8, which rotates on wheels 17 engaging a rail 18, and is driven by a motor 19 through a pinion 20 engaging a toothed rail 21 encircling the hopper. The discharge table 10 is supported on the hopper 8 by radial webs 9, and is formed with a wedge-shaped protuberance 11. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the hopper is fixed and the shaft is made rotatable, and in another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the rotary furnace is replaced by a second annular shaft furnace disposed below the first. Additional heat may be supplied to the hot gases before they enter the hopper by burners extending from a bustle ring round the -upper part of the shoot 23, Fig. 5, (not shown). In another modification, Fig. 6, the hot gases leave the kiln by a separate flue 42 leading to an annular distributing channel 43, and the inner furnace wall 40 widens at the base into a part-conical projection 41 feeding the pocketed material through an opening 44 onto the dicharge table 10 supported in the rotary hopper 8. A final and generally similar modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), has a fixed hopper and a rotary shaft.
