Abstract

A mixture of 2 : 4- and 2 : 6-dinitrotoluene suitable for use in the production of toluylene di-isocyanate is obtained from a mixture of dinitrotoluenes obtained by the direct nitration of toluene by cooling the mixture in the presence of a solvent to a temperature from 0 DEG to -10 DEG C., separating the crystals from the liquid phase, and washing them with fresh solvent. The solvent may be aqueous methanol, aqueous ethanol, isopropanol, aqueous acetone or mixtures of chloroform, carbon tetrachloride or aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, or xylene, with aliphatic hydrocarbons such as petrol, hexane, iso-octane, cyclohexane or mixtures thereof. The solvent used for washing the crystals may be used for treating a further quantity of the crude mixture of dinitrotoluenes. In examples: (1) the use of various solvents is illustrated; (2) shows the process adapted for continuous operation.
