Abstract
751,027. Pipe and rod joints. WURZ. BURGER, P. D. Jan. 22, 1954 [Jan. 23, 1953], No. 2012/54. Class 99(1). In a joint of the kind in which a securing and sealing ring E is deformed to grip a pipe or rod T by compression between coupling members such as a fitting B and nut N, the ring E, shown undeformed in Fig. 4, comprises a main body 10 having its bore formed with a helical cutting edge 12 or a series of annular cutting edges, and a conical surface 7 adapted to be engaged by the nut, and comprises also a yieldable, forward extension 11 having a bore of greater diameter than the cutting edge. A buttress thread, formed in a cylindrical bore 23, has a rear, surface-hardened face 13 inclined at 10 to 20 degrees to the joint axis, and a front face having a rearward rake of 2 degrees. The thread is left-handed when a conventional coupling nut is used. The ring surface 7 is inclined at 25 to 35 degrees, and the nut surface 6 at an equal or smaller angle. The mean length of the ring body 10 is equal to its thickness. The length of the extension 11 is 3 to 6 times its thickness which is a third to a fifth of the thickness of the ring body 10. The extension has a thickened end 8 engaging the end face 2 of the fitting B. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the helical cutting edge terminates short of the end of the cylindrical bore, and the yieldable extension is of uniform thickness terminating in a bevelled cutting edge.
