Abstract
Procaine penicillin mainly in platelet form is produced by crystallizing the procaine penicillin in the presence of a water-soluble ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose. Preferably a salt of procaine such as the hydrochloride, phosphate or acetate is reacted with a metal or amine salt of penicillin, e.g. the sodium salt, in aqueous solution in the presence of 0.05 to 1 per cent and especially 0.1 per cent (w/v) of the ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose. The concentration of penicillin in the reaction solution should not exceed 60,000 units per mil. The crystallization may be carried out in the presence of buffers such as sodium citrate and preservatives such as phenyl mercuric nitrate and sodium metabisulphite.
