Abstract

750,441. Starting. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., Sir W. G. Nov. 9, 1954. [Oct. 5, 1953], No. 27286/53. Class 7(5) In an engine provided with inlet and / or exhaust valve operating means including at least one racking lever d mounted on a shaft j for oscillation, the shaft j is adjustable by a lever k to raise or lower the lever fulcrum to give three valve positions:- (1) the valve b is held off its seat to effect decompression, (2) the valve b is operated with considerable tappet clearance to reduce the valve-open period and produce a high compression of the charge, and (3) an intermediate position in which the valve b operates normally. The exhaust valve b which is guided in the cylinder head a, is shrouded at its seat by masking c, the valve being operated by the lever d actuated by a push rod e and tappet f from a cam g. The part of a shaft j on which the lever d oscillates is eccentric. The invention is applicable to both two and four stroke endings and in the latter case the inlet valve operating lever may be mounted on the same shaft as the lever d.
