Abstract

749,791. Balloons. GUIDE BRIDGE RUBBER CO., Ltd., and NEWTON, G. H. Nov. 1, 1954 [Oct. 30, 1953], No. 30081/53. Class 4. A balloon has an elastic envelope 10 with a normally closed.valve 16, 18 for controlling communication between the space within the envelope and the exterior thereof, the valve comprising a flap integral with the envelope and adapted to fit against a tube projecting from the envelope, and means responsive to changes in a transverse dimension of the envelope and operative to open the said valve when the said dimension exceeds a predetermined value. As shown, the balloon comprises an inner elastic envelope 10, and an outer burstable envelope 30, having necks 12, 32 respectively receiving a tube 14 with plug 15 in a fluid-tight manner. Two opposite portions 16 of the neck 12 are adapted to act as flaps, being attached by inextensible cords 20 to points 22 on the ends of a diameter of the balloon, so that when the diameter exceeds a given value, the flaps 16 are raised to uncover holes 18 and permit outflow of the lifting gas.
