In a buckle for adjustably fastening straps and other flexible strips and comprising a rigid channel-section body accommodating a strip having a hole therein engaging a fixed pin upstanding from the base of the channel and a hinged rigid cover on the body which, when closed, on the body retains the strap &c. in engagement with the pin, at least one channel side wall has an inwardly directed lip against which the closed cover abuts and a turnbutton on the inner side of the cover, when this latter is closed, engages beneath the lip to lock the cover. As shown, the side walls C of the channel-shaped body A of the buckle each have inturned lips B and the cover J, hinged by rivets L to the side walls C, is provided with turnbuttons M each in the form of a dished circular disc with a segment removed, the buttons being adapted when rotated as by milled knobs on the outside of the cover to positions such that the peripheral straight portions N face parallel to adjacent lips B, they can pass freely past the lips to allow the cover to be raised and the strap H disengaged from the pin D upstanding from the base of the body A, and when in any other position the arcuate peripheries of the buttons M engage beneath the lips B, thereby locking the cover J. There may be more than two buttons M or only one and in this latter case the button engages both lips B and its head may have a transverse slot so that it can be turned only with a tool such as a coin or the thumb nail. Each button M may be spring-biased towards its inoperative position, e.g. by a combined torsion and compression spring, whilst adapted to be positively located as by interengaging serrations in any other angular position. The body A has its base extended at E beyond the side walls C for attachment of a co-operating strap member F. The milled knobs may have an index or straight portion corresponding to the flat portions N of the buttons M for reference in relation to the longitudinal sides of the cover or to a rib or other index in the cover to indicate the positions of the buttons.
