749,473. Projectile fuzes. SOC. ANON. BELGE DE MECANIQUE ET D'ARMEMENT. Sept. 8, 1953 [Sept. 15, 1952], No. 24861/53. Class 9(1) The percussion fuze shown in Fig. 1 has a body 1 projecting from a fuze carrier 2, a spring 3 being interposed between bearing surfaces on the body and carrier. Fixed in the body 1 is a hard head 4, e.g. of tungsten carbide, with radial cutting edges and integral with a striker 5 spaced from a detonator 6. A spacing member 11 bearing on the detonator is held by a spring 16 and locked by balls 7, 8 placed in oblique housings 9, 10 in the body 1. The body 1 is locked in the fuze carrier by balls 12, 13 mounted in housings 14, 15 in the carrier. Forward displacement of the body 1 relative to the carrier 2 is prevented by a ring 17 and a fluid-tight annular packing, e.g. rubber, leather, or cardboard is interposed between the forward end of the carrier and the fuze body 1. When the projectile is at rest and in a horizontal position the balls 7, 8, 12, 13 take up the positions shown in Fig. 1 locking both the detonator and the fuze body. Arming of the fuze only takes place when the projectile is rotated at sufflicient speed for centrifugal force to move both the balls 7, 8 and the balls 12, 13 outwards in their housings, the fuze body and detonator are then freed and on impact the detonator impinges on the striker. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 621,931.
