Abstract

708,351. Projectile fuzes. ANSTALT FUR DIE ENTWICKLUNG VON ERFINDUNGEN UND GEWERBLICHEN ANWENDUNGEN ENERGA. July 27, 1951 [Aug. 8, 1950], No. 17902/51. Class 9(1) A percussion fuze formed in two parts 1, 2 screwed together has a striker 3 slidable axially in the body. A projecting head 4, e.g. of tungsten carbide, has indentations and cutting edges to bite into armour plate: A rubber washer 5 seals the joint between the fuze body part 1 and the striker, the latter being held by a safety device comprising balls 6 housed between an annular groove in the striker and an annular inertia block 11 surrounding a detonator carrier 7. The block 11 is held by a spring 15 abutting a shoulder on the carrier, while a spring 9 is placed within the detonator carrier to bear against a flange on the striker. A detonator 8 is screwed into the carrier 7. On firing, the inertia block 11 sets back against the action of the spring 15 whereupon claws 12 on the block hit a shoulder 13 on the carrier and after being deformed enter a groove 14, thus locking the block and carrier together. The balls 6 are then liberated and the fuze is armed, so that on impact the striker 3 is driven into the detonator overcoming the resistance of the spring 9. If the angle of impact is such that the striker is not touched, the fuze functions by inertia the carrier 7 being carried forward on to the striker. Specification 621,931 is referred to.
