Abstract
749,395. Stuffing-box packing. MULLER, J. Oct. 7, 1953 [May 11, 1953], No. 27601/53. Class 122(5) [Also in Group XXVIII] A pipe 41 or other cylindrical article such as the sheath of an electric conductor, a rod or a cable, is connected to a union member 2 by means of a sealing and clamping ring 1, Fig. 1, having symmetrical tapered ends to engage conical surfaces on the member 2 and on a nut 3, a central external groove 5 and an internal ridge 9 situated opposite the groove and flanked by grooves 8 lying opposite external portions of the ring between the groove 5 and the tapered ends. As shown, the groove 5 is V-shaped and extends half way through the ring, shallow grooves 6 are formed in the outer surface, and the ends of the ring are rounded, thus providing peripheral sealing surfaces, 13, 14 to engage the conical surfaces on the members 2, 3. Near each end of the bore of the ring 1 is a shallow groove 10 having a conical base 11 so that ridges are formed which together with the ridge 9 bite into the pipe, and sealing surfaces 15 between the grooves 8, 10 engage the pipe In Fig. 2, the outer surface of the ring has cylindrical surfaces 16 and conical surfaces 17, and the bore has the grooves 8 and two cylindrical sealing surfaces 19. The ring may be made of metallic, plastic or metallo-plastic material.
