749,141. Lathe details. ENGINEERING DIAMONDS, Ltd., and ALLEN, R. Jan. 8, 1954, No. 657/54. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIII] A device for forming a concave surface on a workpiece in a lathe comprises a rotatable mandrel 5 with means for fixedly supporting a tool 16 thereon so that upon rotation of the mandrel the operating end 16a of the tool travels along a circular path. The mandrel is mounted between a centre 2 detachably secured by a screw 3 in a base 1 and a fixed centre 4 having an axial bore to receive a spindle 11 provided with a squared end to form a driving connection with a recess 10 in the mandrel upon rotation by a handle 13. The tool 16 is secured by a screw 15 in an annular flange 5a having a flat surface 22 at a predetermined distance from the axis of rotation to enable the end 16a of the tool to be set at the required radius. The mandrel 5 may be replaced by others in which the screw 15 is radial and the portion 5a is of smaller diameter or is dispensed with. In the latter case a flat reference surface is formed on the mandrel shank. A surface 25 enables the device to be mounted with the mandrel in a horizontal, instead of a vertical position.
