Abstract
748,498. Crucibles. BIRLEC, Ltd. March 23, 1953 [March 21, 1952], No. 7862/53. Class 82(1). [Also in Groups XII and XXII] Molten metal is poured from a heated gastight chamber 12 through an inclined discharge tube 28 extending from within the chamber below the metal surface 14 to outside the chamber above the surface by intermittently supplying gas under pressure to the chamber above the surface, the discharge tube having a restricted metal inlet orifice 48 or like flow-throttling constriction at its lower end. To obtain pourings of constant weight the metal level may be maintained steady by tilting the chamber or re-charging it or the time of pour which may be electronically controlled may be steadily increased, the surface not being allowed to fall more than four inches below the discharge level. Gas is supplied through a valve 25 for effecting the pouring, and the pressure then released to the atmosphere by valve 20, and an induction heater 16 maintains the metal molten. Instead of an axial hole in the closed lower end of the discharge tube the constriction may consist of a radial hole in its wall, or may be provided by a refractory brick spaced near to the end of an open discharge tube.
