748,093. Heating steam boilers by steam. PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. Aug. 12, 1954 [Aug. 26, 1953], No. 23609/53. Class 123(2). An apparatus for supplying low pressure sealing steam to the glands of a condensing steam turbine consists of a casing f into which water is fed by a pump a and which contains a coil g connected at its upper end by a pipe h to a source of high pressure steam and at its lower end to a floatcontrolled trap i through which water condensed in coil g is periodically discharged. The steam generated in casing f discharges through a pipe d into the chamber of a float valve j which serves to prevent passage of water to the turbine glands if the level of water in casing f rises excessively and flows from the valve chamber to the turbine glands through a control valve b and a pipe e. The valve b is adjusted manually or automatically in dependence on the gland steam pressure to regulate the steam output from the generator, the pump a being designed so that its output falls with increasing back pressure to vary the water level in casing f and hence the area of heating surface contacted by the water, thus providing for the varying steam output.
