Abstract
A reclaimed natural and/or synthetic rubber having reduced staining properties is prepared by devulcanizing scrap vulcanized natural and/or synthetic rubber and treating the scrap before, during, or after devulcanizing with a compound selected from formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein, chloral, aldol, methylol, or paraldehyde. In one example tyre scrap containing about 40 per cent GR-S and 60 per cent natural rubber is mixed with non-staining rubber softening oils (terpenes and mineral spirits), non-staining plasticizer (pine-products-gum and wood rosin), calcium chloride, and water, the mixture heated and agitated in an autoclave at about 200 lbs./sq. inch and at about 388 DEG F., and 37 per cent aqueous formaldehyde added and the mixture heated in the digester for a further hour at 388 DEG F. Alternatively the 37 per cent aqueous formaldehyde is added to the initial mixture or at intervals throughout the five hour devulcanizing period. Other examples are described illustrating the use of the other treating compounds referred to above in aqueous solution or in an organic solvent such as acetone, carbon tetrachloride, mineral spirits, benzene, or a terpene.
