Abstract
747,916. Lubricating. PUROLATOR PRODUCTS, Inc. Oct. 7, 1953 [Oct. 23, 1952], No. 27529/53. Class 12 (3). An internal-combustion engine includes an oil pump, a full-flow filter installation consisting of a filter casing and a filter element, and an adapter mounted on the engine between the engine and the pump, the adapter comprising means for conveying the oil from the engine to the pump via the adapter, from the pump via the adapter to the filter casing and from the filter casing via the adapter to the engine. As shown, an adapter 15 is interposed between the inner face of a pump 18 and the outer face of a flange 37 on the engine block 11. The adapter has three passageways 16, 20, 26, the passageway 16 registering with a port 17 of the pump and a port 14 of the engine, passageway 20 registering with a port 19 of the pump and. a port 38 connected by a conduit 21 to a filter 23, and passageway 26 registering with a port 27 of the engine and a port 39 connected by a conduit 25 to the filter. The pump shaft 40 is driven from the shaft 41 through an extension shaft 42. The adapter is secured in place by bolts passing through holes 45, 46 in the adapter, holes 47 and 48 in the pump and into tapped holes 49, 50 in the engine flange 37. With the arrangement shown, the oil passes through the full flow filter 23, except when the filter is clogged, in which case a spring-loaded by-pass valve allows the oil to flow direct from the pump to the bearings. The filter may be mounted directly on the oil pump.
