Abstract

747,642. Washing granular material. STRIPA GRUVAKTIEBOLAG. Oct. 22, 1953 [Dec. 4, 1952], No. 29186/53. Class 82(2). A sink and float separation is carried out by mixing the raw material with an auxiliary medium comprising water and granulated material substantially of a grain size 0À05-5 m.m., continuously feeding the mixed material to a vibrating trough on which the auxiliary medium forms a bed containing 50-60 per cent of solids, the heavy particles sinking through the bed whilst the lighter fractions float; dividing the bed into at least two superposed layers, separating the auxiliary medium from the raw material and re-using the medium. The bed can be fluidised by passing water upwards through the bed, the trough 2 having a perforated bottom 1. The superposed layers can be separated by a plate (or plates) 5 and the separated layers discharged by prolonging each successive superposed plate to give two (or more) discharges at 8, 4. Alternatively the plates may be formed with a 90 degree twist along their length thus causing the superposed layers to discharge side-by-side. By the use of a bed rather than the conventional suspension a much higher apparent specific gravity can be obtained e.g. 4À5 with ferro-silicon.
