Abstract
746,275. Look-out reflectors for vehicles. O'SHEI, W. E. May 15, 1952 [Dec. 6, 1951], No. 28623/51. Class 103 (2). [Also in Group XXV] A rear-viewing mirror is carried from a base member adapted to be secured firmly to a vehicle body, by means of a flexible joint comprising two parts, one of which may be the base member, the parts having inter-engaging means for locating these surfaces in a predetermined abutting relationship, and resilient means being provided which permits the parts, when the mirror is accidentally hit, both to rock and turn, the parts being restored to their abutting relationship, when the mirror is released, by the resilient means with, if necessary, manual assistance. In the construction shown, a mirror 1 is carried on a support 2 by means of a ball joint 3 which can be tightened in adjusted position by a nut 4. The support has a part 9 with a pyramidal end 19 shaped to correspond to a cavity in a base member 5 which has a tubular stem 6 secured to a vehicle body 25 by means of a nut 7 and rubber washer 7a. The part 9 of the support 2 is formed with a groove 10 in which is pivotally secured one end of a universal joint member 23, the other end carrying a lug 20 secured to one end of a screwed rod 11. The rod extends through the stem 6 and is pressed downwardly by means of a spring 16. If the mirror is accidentally struck the spring acts to restore the mirror to its original position, unless the part 9 is twisted through more than 45 degrees with respect to the base member, in which case the mirror will take up a different position, but can then be twisted by hand back to its normal location. In a modification the universal joint 23 may be replaced by a flexible cable. In another modification the universal joint is connected to one end of a tension spring, the other end being secured to the rod of the stem 6. In a further arrangement the ends of the spring are fixed respectively to the part 9 and the base member 5, whereby the spring resists twisting of the mirror from its normal position. Specifications 746,366, [Group XXV] and 746,370 are referred to.
