Abstract

742,801. Carrying conductors through partitions; mounting terminals; repeater housings. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Dec. 4, 1953 [Jan. 20, 1953], No. 1614/53. Classes 36 and 38 (1). A moisture-tight seal for a conductor 13 passing through a bulkhead 6 from a highpressure region 5 to a low-pressure region 4 comprises a ceramic, quartz or vitreous bushing 16 sealed into a passage through the bulkhead and provided with a central bore 19 through which the conductor is drawn and reduced in diameter by the drawing process to fit tightly in the bore. The bush 16 has a conical surface 18 which fits a corresponding surface in tho passage, and a layer of soft metal may be provided therebetween which flows to fill any imperfections in the surfaces and form a moisture-proof seal when the bush is pressed into the passage. Grooves may be formed on the conicalsurface of the bush or on one or both surfaces of the soft metal layer. The conductor 13 is preferably made of harder and less ductile material than copper, such as phosphor bronze, and is formed with an end portion 20 of reduced diameter which will pass freely through the bore 19, and an intermediate portion 21, which may be coated with a soft metal which will flow under pressure, of a diameter which is initially greater than that of the bore 19. The end 20 of the conductor is threaded through the bush and the portion 21 then drawn through to form a tight seal there. with. The exposed part of the conductor 13 is tightly enclosed in a polythene plug 15 which is held in the passage by a gland nut 22. The conductor 13 is connected to a cable conductor 9, the joint being enclosed in insulation 17. Specifications 742,331 and 742,830 are referred to.
