Lagging irons engage each other by hooks 2 at the ends each iron having a hook at each end oppositely disposed and the hooks are locked together to support one iron cantilever fashion from the other. The hooks are S-shaped and when engaged, the end of the hook of one iron pushes a pin along inclined slots 3 in the other iron and when the hooks are fully engaged the pin drops back into the turned back end of the hook, and supports the iron cantilever fashion. The pin may be subsequently removed or retained by a nut in the slot. In Figs. 6 and 6a the hooks are retained in engagement by pins 16 on a spring stirrup 15 and fitting in registering holes 14 in the hooks 2 and jaws 13 on the ends of the irons. In a further modification recesses on the outside of the hooks are engaged by a stirrup embracing both hooks. In a further modification a spring latch in one iron engages the hook of the adjacent iron the latch being accommodated in a slot from which it can be removed when props support the iron. in still further modifications a pivoted catch engages a hook by notches or a smooth friction surface Figs. 12-15 (not shown).
