Abstract
Niobium and tantalum are separated at least partially by reducing a mixture of the pentoxides to a stage in which a niobium-enriched tetroxide phase is present, dissolving said phase in hot sulphuric or phosphoric acid, to the former of which selenium oxychloride may, if desired be added, and separating the dissolved tetroxide phase. In the example, a mixture of oxides is reduced with hydrogen containing water vapour at a partial pressure of 0.04 mm. and the product treated with 80 per cent by weight sulphuric acid at 200 DEG C. The mixture is filtered and acids of niobium and tantalum are precipitated, e.g. with ammonia. When using hydrogen, a low water content favours a pentoxide phase poor in niobium and a tetroxide phase rich in tantalum and a high water content favours the reverse. Carbon monoxide, if desired in admixture with carbon dioxide may alternatively be used as reducing agent. More intense reduction leads to a pentoxide phase poor in niobium and less intense reduction to a phase poor in tantalum.
