Abstract
521,202. Alkali bicarbonates. DREYFUS, H., and GROOMBRIDGE, W. H. Nov. 10, 1938, No. 32677. Divided out of 513,226. [Class 1 (ii)] [Also in Group IV] Alkali bicarbonates are produced by treating solutions of alkali salts of aliphatic acids such as sodium acetate in concentrated aqueous ethyl alcohol with carbon dioxide at above 70‹C. preferably under pressure. Carbon dioxide may be passed into a series of towers in countercurrent with the acetate solution ; the towers may have enlarged lower portions serving as settling chambers, the draw-off for the solution being above the enlargement. In an example, a solution of sodium acetate in ethyl alcohol of 94 per cent. is treated in an autoclave at 100‹C. with carbon dioxide at 215 lb. pressure. If desired sodium acetate can be converted into the more soluble potassium salt before treatment.
