Abstract
A thermoplastic mass is obtained by heating a benzyl ether of a ligneous substance at a temperature between 115 and 346 DEG C. in the presence of an alkali. Benzyl hydrocarbons formed during the reaction may be distilled off whilst the reaction is in progress. Thus sawdust or other ligneous substance is benzylated with benzyl chloride and alkali, excess alkali and benzyl chloride removed by steam treatment although some alkali is left as catalyst and the mass is pressed and gradually heated in a vessel provided with a distillation column starting at 150 DEG C. and continuing to act in excess of 346 DEG C. If the distillation is stopped at or below 250 DEG C. the residual hydrocarbons act as plasticizers for the mass. Advantageously highly superheated steam may be used for the distillation. The products may be pressed and crushed to provide the finished thermoplastic.
