Abstract

A copper-chromium hydrogenation catalyst contains 7-25 parts chromium per 100 parts copper and is prepared by forming, preferably by co-precipitation, a mixture of copper and chromium carbonates and heating to about 300 DEG C. to produce the oxides. The catalyst is used in the production of phenyl methyl carbinol by reduction of acetophenone, and may be activated by heating with hydrogen in presence of acetophenone.ALSO:Phenyl methyl carbinol is produced by introducing hydrogen under pressure into acetophenone in presence of a copper-chromium catalyst prepared by igniting a mixture of the carbonates and containing 7-25 parts chromium per 100 parts copper. For example, the pressure may be 75 lb. per sq. in. and the temperature 130 DEG C.
