An elastic band for garments to contract the margin of an opening, such as a torso or leg opening, consists of a strip of thin elastic sheet rubber, an outer sheath wall of non- elastic textile fabric covering the outer face of the rubber strip, and an inner sheath wall made up of tape or braid having incorporated therein longitudinally extending rubber' threads to provide elasticity . lengthwise of the band, the band being united by a plurality of parallel longitudinally extending rows of stitches inserted while the rubber strip and inner sheath wall are in stretched condition. In Fig. 2 a strip of elastic sheet rubber 12 and a woven textile tape 14 having longitudinally extending threads 17 of elastic rubber, are stitched at 16 whilst in stretched condition to the inner face of non-elastic garment material 11 which is folded over to form a hem 15, located between the material 11 and the strip 12 as shown, or between the strip 12 and the tape 14, Fig. 4 (not shown). In Fig. 6, the non-elastic material 19 covering the outer face of the strip 12 is of different material from that of the garment 20, its edges 21 preferably being folded about the edges of the rubber strip 12. The band may extend completely around the opening of the garment, or for only a portion of the opening. For wide bands one or more intermediate rows of stitching 16 may be used.
