Abstract

Moulded or shaped articles are made by partially polymerizing a mixture of monomers, of which when fully polymerized alone one is thermoplastic and the other is thermoset, to a sheet or block which is sufficiently rigid to be stored and handled and then shaping or moulding under heat and pressure whereby polymerization is completed to form a rigid infusible product. The two classes of monomers are exemplified by methyl, ethyl, propyl and isopropyl methacrylates and styrene; and allyl methacrylate. More than one thermoplastic resin-forming monomer may be used. In either of the two stages of the process heating may be wholly or partially replaced by high energy radiation, e.g. from a cobalt 60 source. In the example a syrup made by heating a mixture of equal parts of methyl and allyl methacrylates with benzoyl peroxide is poured into a casting mould of spaced parallel glass plates and heated at 35 DEG to 40 DEG C. for 40 to 50 hours. The rigid sheet formed is preheated at 95 DEG to 105 DEG C. and moulded or shaped under pressure at 150 DEG C. The process may be applied to the production of lenses and transparent domes for aircraft. Specifications 556,743, 585,576, [both in Group V], 585,580 and 610,962 are referred to.
