Filter cells 3 of a vertical travelling band carried by upper and lower sprockets are cleaned whilst passing below the lower sprocket 7 by a continuous or an intermittent jet of oil or other suitable liquid issuing fron a transversely - reciprocated spray nozzle 10; each cell 3 being tilted about a pivot pin 4 by a stop 8 so that first the upper surface then the dirty side is washed The cells are of conventional construction, e.g grids, plates, wire gauze or wire wool.
