A circular knitting machine having quality control mechanism is provided with a yarn furnishing device, the rate of delivery of which is varied in accordance with the variation in stitch length. An elastic yarn is fed through conical rollers 17, 18, the position of the yarn being varied by guide levers 23, 24 which are connected by a lever system to a lever 5 which operates the stitch cam 4. In knitting surgical hose with a heel pouch of non-elastic yarn the elastic feeder 10 is put out of action when necessary by mechanism 15, 16, and a clutch 20 is disconnected so as to break the drive to roller 17. If the elastic yarn is to be laid in between knitted loops of non-elastic yarn, a yarn guide 30 is provided to permit the rate of feed of the elastic yarn to be reduced without moving the stitch cam. The guide 30 is connected to the main guide 23 by a stop 37 on the main guide and a spring 38, so as to normally follow the movements of guide 23, but is movable independently of lever 23 from a stud 32 on a control drum 7 through a link and lever system. In a second embodiment the furnishing device comprises one conical and one cylindrical roller, and the rate of feed is adjusted as the tension in the yarn varies due to alteration in the length of the loops drawn.
