A tool for crimping connectors on to wire wherein a pair of dies are carried in the head of the tool and the head is rotatable with respect to the body of the tool comprises a body including force generating means, a head having a swivel connection with said body, a fixed die piece in said head, a ram in said body movable by said force generating means along a path towards said fixed die, a movable die assembly having a crimping surface, means rotatably connecting said movable die assembly to said ram, a first key element in said movable die assembly, said head having a second key element, both of said elements having engaging surfaces extending parallel to the path of said ram to prevent rotation of said die assembly with respect to said head. The tool 10 comprises a body 16, a head 15 and a pair of handles 17 and 18. The handle 17 is movable and when pressed towards the fixed handle 18 a piston rod 19 forces hydraulic fluid into a chamber 20 and drives a spring-loaded ram 22 towards the head 15. The spring 24 returns the ram after the crimping when a pressure release valve 25 is opened. The ram has a socket 40 for receiving a die holder 36 carrying an impression die 38 the holder being pivotally secured in the ram by a shoulder screw 42. The rectangular base of the impression die fits into a channel 52 (Fig. 7) in the holder to prevent the die from twisting and a smaller channel 54 in the holder cooperates with a relieved area 56 in the die base to provide a clearance for the insertion of a screwdriver blade to loosen the die and facilitate replacement. The die holder is prevented from rotating in the head 15 by a key 62 which engages a keyway in the head. Pivotally mounted on the head 15 is a member 70 which carries a fixed die 64 which is also non-rotatably mounted. The member 70 carries a spring-loaded latch 82 for engagement with a lip 86 on the head 15. A quick take-up piston (not shown) may be provided for closing the dies until they take an initial grip on the connector. The head 15 swivels with respect to the body 16 by providing a flange 110 on the ram cylinder 21 which is engaged by a flange 114 on a collar 112 which screws on the head 15. In a modification the ram 128 (Fig. 8) has a recess 130 to receive the stem 132 of the die 136 which is free to rotate in the ram. A key 138 fixed in the side of the die engages in a key-way in the head 28A. The swivel connection between the head and the body 16A consists of a flange 110A on the ram cylinder 21A over which fits an annular lip 142 on the head. A groove 144 is provided on the inside of the lip 142 for receiving a split retaining ring 146 which locks the head firmly on the body. A plurality of small holes 148 are drilled through the lip into the groove 144 to facilitate removal of the split ring.
