Abstract

1,123,634. Fluid operated gripping tool. J. A. PAWLOSKI. 1 Nov., 1965 [4 Nov., 1964], No. 46123/65. Heading B4W. A fluid-operated gripping tool comprises an elongate housing 8 having front and rear portions 10 and 12, a pair of co-operating jaws 32, 36 attached to the front portion in slots 28 and 30 respectively and a piston with a forwardly extending ram 50 reciprocatably mounted in a cylinder 17 in the rear portion, the movement of the piston and ram effecting opening and closing of the jaws, being controlled by the manual actuation of the spring-biased spool valve 62 in the rear portion of the housing. The valve 62 controls the flow of the pressure means, e.g. air through numerous duets 80 to 85 and 92, to the respective sides of the piston. The jaw member 36 is fixed to the front portion of the housing and the jaw 32 is pivotable about a pin member 37. To actuate the jaw 32 the ram 50 has a member 52 attached to its forward end and carries rollers 55, 56 which co-operate with the inner surfaces 43, 44 of the jaw members, the surface 44 serving to support the ram and the surface 43 of the jaw member 32 being of cam form so that the forward movement of the piston and ram effects pivoting of the jaw 32 in a gripping movement and the retraction of the ram permits the opening movement of the jaw by a spring 41. A plug member 14 is attached to the forward end of the rear portion to which the front portion is releasably attached in a breech lock manner to permit the quick release of the front portion for replacing of the jaw members. In a modification, a spring-loaded manually operated jaw is mounted alongside the jaw 32 on the pivot 37 to permit initial gripping of a workpiece prior to actuation of the device proper.
