Abstract
736,699. Igniting burners. NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL. Dec. 9, 1953 [Sept. 10, 1952], No. 22743/52. Class 75 (3). A torch igniter for a combustion chamber comprises a chamber 15 continuously fed with a rich fuel/air mixture and provided with continuous sparking, rotary motion being imparted to the mixture to produce intermittent explosions and hence a pulsating flame. The gases are swirled by the air entering the chamber tangentially at 16 and the frequency of the explosions is said to vary according to the spacing of the sparking point from the side of the chamber 15. Although the chamber 15 may connect directly with the combustion chamber 14 of a jet propulsion plant, at high altitudes an intermediate chamber 25, Fig. 3, is desirable fitted with a valve 28 to allow a pressure of 14 p.s.i. above atmospheric to be maintained in the chamber 15.
