Abstract

735,880. Magnetic tests. METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 24, 1953 [Aug. 13, 1952], No. 20375/52. Class 37. Apparatus for detecting cracks in a ferromagnetic member by magnetizing the member and applying a magnetic powder to the surface comprises two pairs of poles located on perpendicular axes with adjustable spacing and reversible polarity and capable of being used as contact members for passing current through the test object. As shown, the four poles 3, 4, 5, 6 are provided with D.C. magnetizing coils, pole 4 being movable along a slot 7 in a metal bed-plate 1, and pole 3 being adjustable by a hand wheel 9. A fifth pole or contact member 12 whose height is adjustable may be used in conjunction with the other poles or contact members 3-6 to give different directions of magnetization in the test object, as selected on a control panel 29 and indicated by coloured lamps 17.
