Abstract

601,490. Magnetic tests and measurements. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., TURNER, H. C., HARTLAND, G. W., and LEONARD, J. L. Oct. 3, 1945, No. 25700. [Class 37] The thickness of non-magnetic coatings on magnetic materials is measured by apparatus comprising a single pair of polepieces 2, 3, Fig. 1, in the air-gap of which a coil 1 energized from a D.C. source 11, 12 is movable. One or both the polepieces have an extension 7, 8 adapted to be placed upon the non-magnetic coating under test, and one or both polepieces is/are magnetically polarized so that the flux passing across the air gap and hence the deflection of the spring-biassed coil 1 is dependent upon the thickness of the non-magnetic coating. As shown, the polarization is effected by coils 9, 10 energized from the same D.C. supply 11, 12, but, alternatively, a permanent magnet. Fig. 2 (not shown) may be used. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement where the polepieces 2, 3 are polarized by permanent magnets 18, 19, magnetic shunts 20, 21 being adjusted until normally no flux links the coil 1. When the single polar extension 7 is then placed on a non-magnetic coating the magnetic balance is upset and a deflection produced dependent on the coating thickness. The moving coil current or, according to the Provisional Specification, the polarizing current may be adjustable for setting purposes. Specification 378,983 is referred to.
