573,182. Measuring physical qualities of materials. KING, A. J., and METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 21, 1943, No. 8147. [Class 37] Apparatus for the detection of faults in articles of non-ferrous electrically conducting material includes a scanning device which comprises an E-shaped magnetic core having on its central limb a coil B which is supplied with audio - frequency current from a suitable oscillator not shown. The outer limbs are provided with coils A, C which are of similar dimensions but are wound in opposite directions. Coils A and C are connected in series and to an audio-frequency responsive device such as a pair of telephones, not shown: In operation the device is moved over the surface of apiece of non-magnetic metal T and, provided the material is homogeneous, the eddy current pattern due to the coil B is symmetrical, thus causing equal and opposite voltages to be induced in coils A and C, so that no noise is heard in the telephones. If; however, the coils A and C are on opposite sides of a crack such as F, the eddy current pattern is disturbed and the audio-frequency note is heard in the telephones. Sensitivity is increased by tuning the coils A, B and C to the audio frequency. A visual detector such as a cathode ray oscillograph may be employed.
