Abstract

735,618. Spring-suspensions for motor-cycles. JOSIF, J., and VENYGR, K. Nov. 4, 1953 [June 24, 1953], No. 30481/53. Class 136(3). In a motor cycle rear wheel suspension of the kind where the rear wheel is carried by the free end of a pivotally mounted swinging arm, the swinging arm 17 is pivotally mounted within the gear box by means of bearings 13, 14 on the shaft 6 which together with the shaft 3 carries the speed changing gear. The bearings 13, 14 may be made in two parts. To facilitate dismantling of the arm 17, bushings 16 are interposed between the shaft 6 and the bearings 13, 14. On withdrawing the bushings in an axial direction the arm 17 can be detached from the shaft 6. Alternatively, the shaft 6 may be subdivided in the range of the bearings so that by disconnecting the individual sections of the shaft the swinging arm is free to be withdrawn from the gear box. The arm 17 is formed by a tubular steel pressing so that it surrounds the drive shaft 8 and bevel gears 10. The rear wheel 20 is carried by a spindle 7 which is supported in an overhung fashion by a bearing 19 on the arm 17. Two arms 17 may be provided, one at each side of the rear wheel to support the spindle 7 at both ends. The arm 17 has a downwardly extending projection which is connected to the gear box through a shock absorber 18.
