Abstract
Crude oil is separated from bituminous sand by adding (a) a solvent for bitumen which solvent has a lower specific gravity than bitumen; and (b) a water-soluble salt or an aqueous solution thereof so that the specific gravity of the aqueous phase present in the bituminous sand is increased, subjecting the mixture to sufficient pressure to initiate a separation of the phases, and withdrawing the oil thus freed. The process is carried out without the addition of heat at room temperatures above the freezing point of the liquid constituents of the bituminous sand. Solvent (a) may be a hydrocarbon oil such as kerosene, while water-soluble salt (b) may be sodium chloride. The application of pressure may be effected by air, steam or gas in a pressure chamber, 40 lb. per square inch gauge being recommended, or the mixture may be centrifuged. If desired, the mixture may be subjected to pressure between the addition of solvent (a) and the addition of the salt or salt solution (b).
