Abstract

733,733. Ball-and-ring mills. SZEGO, L. May 7, 1954 [May 13, 1953], No. 13452/53. Class 59. [Also in Group XXX] A ball-and-ring mill comprises a fixed track ring provided at its radially inner side with a track of arcuate cross-section, a rotatable shaft extending through the fixed track ring and carrying a rotatable track ring, a set of balls arranged between the fixed and rotatable track rings, and driving means between the shaft and the rotatable track ring so arranged that the torque reaction during rotation of the shaft tends to urge the rotatable track ring axially along the shaft, the track on the rotatable track ring being so shaped that the axial thrust on the rotatable track ring urges the balls outwardly against the fixed track ring. In the form shown, two axially-spaced fixed track rings 13, 14 are provided and the rotatable shaft 17 carries two rotatable track rings 22, 23, a set of grinding balls 31 being provided between each pair of track rings 13, 22 and 14, 23. The shaft 17 has keyed thereto a sleeve 18 formed with helical grooves 19, 21 of opposite hand and the track rings 22, 23 are formed internally with similar helical grooves 24, 25 of opposite hand, a row of balls 26 being engaged in each pair of grooves 19, 24 and 21, 25. The outer side of each track ring 22, 23 is formed with a track 29 having a curved profile such that the radius of the track increases towards the side of the track ring nearer to the longitudinal centre of the sleeve 18. On rotation of the shaft 17, the track rings 22, 23 are urged axially in opposite directions to increase the pressure between the balls 31 and the fixed track rings 13, 14. Material is fed to the mill through a hopper 32 having an adjustable feed-tube 34 and is distributed by a cone 33 rotating with the sleeve 18. A tapering air passage 37 opens into the interior of the mill through an annular slot 38 and a similar air passage 39 is formed at the discharge end of the mill. In a modification. Fig. 3 (not shown), three additional sets of inner and outer track rings and grinding balls are provided.
