Abstract
An adhesive composition suitable for making laminated paper board comprises an amylaceous material (raw starch, thin boiling starches, British gums) and/or dextrin having an acidity not exceeding the equivalent of 0.1 per cent hydrochloric acid, about 10-15 per cent by weight of the air-dried starch &c. of borax, about 5-10 per cent by weight of the air-dried starch of an alkaline-curing phenol, resorcinol or ketone formaldehyde resin or mixture thereof, sufficient formaldehyde to give at least a 1 to 1 molar ratio of total formaldehyde to phenol, resorcinol or ketone, and sufficient water to gelatinize the starch &c. If the starch &c. to be used has too great an acidity, this should be reduced to the specified value by addition of sodium carbonate, bicarbonate or hydroxide or ammonia. In an example 1100 gallons of water, 3000 pounds of a mixture of thin boiling starches and 300 pounds borax were heated to 190 DEG F. to gelatinize and disperse the starch. The paste was cooled to 140 DEG F. and 250 pounds of a 60 per cent aqueous solution of a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin and 200 pounds of 37 per cent formaldehyde were added, giving a ratio of total formaldehyde to resorcinol of about 3.3 to 1. Other examples are given using dextrin or a mixture of dextrin and other starch degradation products and various proportions of resorcinol formaldehyde resin and formaldehyde.
