Abstract
In a process for recovering cryolite from materials containing aluminium and fluorine compounds, e.g. from waste material in electrolytic furnaces, the material is lixiviated with soda lye and the dissolved compounds containing fluorine and aluminium are precipitated with hydrofluoric acid. The material, which has been previously stored in a damp atmosphere to hydrate the alumina it contains is warmed with soda lye and most of the aluminium and fluorine removed. The remaining material can be treated with hydrofluoric acid, which is then added to the soda lye to produce cryolite. Proportions of sodium and total fluorine contents are adjusted as necessary for cryolite formation. If the original materials are poor in aluminium this is increased by adding alumina or aluminium fluoride.
