Abstract
731,564. Fixtures for holding workpieces to be electroplated. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 26, 1953 [April 7, 1952], No. 8352/53. Class 41. A fixture for holding workpieces to be electroplated comprises an elongated container into which the workpieces are insertable, and which is apertured for the entry of plating liquid, said container having within it two longitudinally extending electrical conductor bars upon which the workpieces may by placed in contiguous alignment, one of said bars being movable towards the workpiece so as to clamp them against one side of the container and the other bar, and movable away from the workpieces to unclamp them. A container 20, having a cover 22 with a slot 27, is covered inside and out with insulating material and is provided with a block 30 of metallic material at the open end and a similar block of insulating material at the other end. Between the blocks are arranged metal bars 35 and 36, bar 36 being immovable while bar 35 is rotatably supported by the blocks and has a lever 50 secured thereto. Bar 35 has a longitudinal portion 45 eccentric of the bar (see Fig. 3) providing a cam which is movable into engagement with workpieces 40 within the container by rotation of bar 35. When loading the container 20 it is placed on a bench which moves the lever clockwise, as seen in Fig. 1. Workpieces such as semi-cylindrical bearings 40 are placed upon the bars 35 and 36 and successively moved back into the containers as succeeding bearings are placed therein. When loaded the container is lifted off the bench and a spring 51 causes bar 35 to rotate and its eccentric portion 45 is moved into engagement with the bearings clamping them against the cover 22 and bar 36 as in Fig. 3. The container is then suspended by conductor hook 60 in a plating bath with the concave surfaces of the bearings equidistant from slot 27 through which the plating current passes, while the convex surfaces are shielded by the container 20.
