Abstract
731,531. Washing granular materials. HARDINGE CO., Inc. Sept. 25, 1951, No. 22387/51. Class 82 (2). Particles are classified according to their settling rates in a body of liquid of specific gravity lower than that of the lightest particles by introducing a mixture of the particles into the body of liquid having a submerged moving supporting surface travelling through it so that the faster settling particles settle on the moving surface while the slower settling particles are kept in suspension in the liquid by eddy currents caused by the moving surface, removing the particles which have settled on the moving surface at one point and removing the particles in suspension in the liquid at another point. One form of apparatus for carrying out this process (Fig. 1) comprises a circular tank 1 containing the liquid and a circular submerged disc 4 rotated by a shaft 5. The particle mixture is fed in at 9 and the faster settling particles are removed from the disc by a scraper 15 and a screw conveyer 12 whilst the particles remaining in suspension are removed with the liquid overflowing at 2. In another similar form, the disc is inclined to the horizontal and the faster settling particles are removed by a scraper from the upper part of the disc which projects above the liquid surface. In further forms, Figs. 5 and 10, the moving surface comprises one or more endless conveyer belts 21, 26, 40 which remove the faster settling particles, the particles in suspension being removed by overflowing the liquid at 24 and 47. The scraper 52, for removing the particles from the belt 40, may be replaced by one or more jets of liquid.
