Abstract
The invention comprises N,N1-dicyclohexyl-3,31-dialkylbenzidines and the corresponding 3,31-dialkoxy compounds, and the preparation thereof by heating the corresponding dialkyl-or dialkoxy-benzidines with cyclohexanol, e.g. in the presence of Raney nickel catalyst. In the example N,N1-dicyclohexyl-3,31-dimethylbenzidine is prepared. The corresponding 3,31-diethoxy compound is also mentioned.ALSO:A composition comprises a mineral lubricating oil and an N,N1-dicyclohexyl-3,31-dialkylbenzidine or the corresponding 3,31-dialkoxybenzidine, e.g. in an amount of about 0.1 to 0.5 per cent by weight of the mineral oil. Other additives which may be present are esters of primary aliphatic alcohols and phosphinic acids containing aromatic radicals. In an example, compositions are prepared using N,N1 - dicyclohexyl - 3,31 - dimethylbenzidine and the corresponding 3,31-diethyoxybenzidine as the additives, and bis-(p-chlorophenyl)-phosphinic acid butyl ester may be used as an additional additive.
