Abstract

730,693. Wave-guides. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. May 6, 1953 [May 21, 1952], No. 12640/53. Class 40 (8). A discharge tube B is positioned in a rectangular wave-guide A to act as a noise generator, the ends E, F of the tube being bent back to pass through the same side of the guide. This arrangement reduces the impedance discontinuity due to the tube. The tube may be non- circular in cross-section having its shorter axis perpendicular to the axis of the guide. It is inserted into the guide through a longitudinal slot which is covered (except where the ends E, F pass through the wall) by a plate C which is integral with the tube. The tube may have an integral cover D which may be associated with switches for cutting off the tube supply or the power in the guide when the tube is removed. A modification is described in which the tube is smoothly curved from one end to the other. The depth of penetration of the tube into the guide may be adjustable. A prior-art arrangement is described (Fig. 1, not shown), in which a discharge tube passes obliquely through opposite walls of a rectangular wave-guide. The ends of the tube are enclosed in circular waveguides which communicate with the main guide and have a cut-off frequency above the working frequency of the main guide.
