Abstract
660,362. Electric discharge apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. June 25, 1948 [Aug. 14, 1947], No. 17109/48. Class 39 (i). Apparatus for amplifying high-frequency energy comprises a pair of wave-guides 27, 28, Fig. 3, means in guide 28 for emitting electrons into guide 27, the high-frequency energy being applied to both guides in such a way that it is delayed in guide 28 relatively to the energy in guide 27 so that more electrons from cathode 24 are emitted into guide 27 when the electric field therein is decelerative and less electrons when the electric field is accelerative. Preferably guide 28 is fed over a path 26 that is half a wavelength longer than the path feeding guide 27. The electrons are emitted from a hot cathode 24. The dividing wall 21 is preferably biassed so that when the electrons are decelerated in guide 28 they are just cut off from entering guide 27. The guides 27, 28 may be coiled to helical form, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). The apparatus may be duplicated by branching from a single wave-guide, Fig. 6. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 a single wave-guide is formed in a spiral, Fig. 7 (Cancelled), and electrons from a source 49 and gated by an appropriately-energized grid 52 pass through windows in the spiral when the field is decelerative so as to give up energy to the wave. In Fig. 8 (Cancelled), the electrons are emitted from a central source 54. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
