Abstract

730,338. Tube expanders. ADAMSON & CO., Ltd., D. March 26, 1954 [March 28, 1953], No. 8631/53. Class 83 (4). A tube expander having a rotatable and longitudinally slidable tapered mandrel in a cylindrical casing, with a driving connection at one end of the casing and a roller cage at the other, has the mandrel urged outwardly by a spring and inwardly by a weaker spring, the outward urge of the stronger spring being removable whereby when the mandrel has been moved outwardly to expand a tube by urging the rollers in the cage outwardly, and the direction of rotation of the roller cage is reversed, the weaker spring now free to expand will with. draw the mandrel. A casing 4 is adapted at one end 5 for connection to a driving unit and carries at its other end a roller cage 16 mounting tapered rollers 18 inclined slightly to the axis of the cage. A tapered mandrel 13 extends through the cage 16 to engage the rollers 18 and is urged outwardly to the expanding position by a strong spring 6 pressing a collar 7 against the end 12 of the mandrel. Drive to the expander is automatically stopped on completion of the tube expanding operation by an overload release. When the tube expanding has been completed the collar 7 is lifted away from the mandrel end 12 by a sleeve 10, pins 9 on which engage the collar and are guided by slots. 11 in the casing 4. The sleeve 10 is locked, in a position in which the spring 6 is compressed and the collar 7 is out of contact with the mandrel, by turning it to lock the pins 9 in locking ends of the slots 11. The tool is then rotated in the reverse direction and this in conjunction with the pressure of a weak spring 14 moves the mandrel 13 inwards.
