Abstract

1,059,592. Tube expanders. CARRIER CORPORATION. Aug. 13, 1963 [Aug. 17, 1962], No. 31960/63. Heading B3J. A tube expander comprises rollers loosely retained in a housing, a mandrel, having a tapered end engaging said rollers, disposed within said housing and a spring arranged in said housing yieldably urging said mandrel inwardly of said housing, the arrangement being such that confinement of the rollers by the inner surface of a tube to be expanded causes axial movement of the mandrel, accompanied by generated radial forces expanding the tube upon rotation of said housing. In operation the end of the tool is inserted into the open end of a tube to be expanded. An abutment member 40 is adjusted in a housing 10 to move a mandrel 26 axially so that its tapered end 28 forces rollers 24, disposed in skew slots 22 in the housing 10, into engagement with the tube. The housing 10 is then rotated and the rollers 24 as a consequence of such rotation draw the mandrel forward against the action of a spring 38, the mandrel causing the rollers to move outwardly to expand the tube. When a thin part 32 of the mandrel reaches the rollers 24 the rollers drop inwardly and the rolling action is terminated.
