[Also in Group XL (a)] A system for controlling the gas pressure in an enclosure, such as for instance a hydrogen-filled thyratron, comprises a substance which absorbs the gas on cooling and evolves it on heating, the latter provided by a resistance heater with a barretter in series. In the arrangement shown, the substance used is the hydride of titanium or zirconium, in the form of pellets 13. These are heated by a resistance 14, which is in series with the barretter 18. Resistance and barretter are across the supply leads to the main cathode heater 9, so that the barretter tends to maintain the current through resistance 14 constant against fluctuations in the supply voltage, which would cause unwanted fluctuations in the temperature of resistance 14, and therefore in the equilibrium pressure of the hydrogen filling. The equilibrium temperature of resistance 14 is determined by the value of a resistor 19 in parallel with it ; this may be deliberately varied if required. A thermistor in parallel with resistance 14 may be used to compensate for temperature variations. According to the Provisional Specification the barretter may be within the envelope.
