Abstract

729,497. Tar cauldrons. MUNICIPAL APPLIANCES CO., Ltd. May 4, 1953 [Nov. 18, 1952], No. 29062/52. Class 107. A tar cauldron for heating bitumen or other viscous substances is of the kind having one or more heating flue pipes having an inlet at or near one end of the tank and adapted to receive the hot gases from an oil burner, such pipe or pipes also having an outlet at or near the same end of the tank at an upper part thereof, the intermediate parts of the pipe extending to and fro in a horizontal direction in the lower part of the tank: It is characterized by having one or more vertically disposed flues let into the tank so as to be surrounded on three sides by the tank end wall member at the inlet/outlet end, the inlet end of the or each pipe entering the tank through its exterior wall, and the outlet end of the pipe or pipes opening into the vertical flue or flues. The heating flue pipe 14 is arranged horizontally with the oil burner 13 at one end and the vertical built-in rectangular flue 12 receiving the smoke from the other end of the flue. Horizontal pipes 20 run transversely through the flue to allow the material being heated to circulate therethrough. An enginedriven compressor unit 17 feeds oil from a fuel tank to the burner. The tank is lagged. According to the Provisional Specification the vertical flue may extend across the full width of the tank, it may have inwardly converging or diverging end walls and/or a curved rear wall, and it may vary in cross-sectional area along its length; also, a platform with a guard rail may be arranged along the end of the tank below the burners.
