Abstract
729,438. Sliver roll-forming machines ; sliver guides. FAIRBAIRN LAWSON COMBE BARBOUR, Ltd. March 16, 1953 [Dec. 15, 1951], No. 29408/51. Class 120(1). In a sliver roll-forming machine wherein a roll is formed on a core which, during roll formation, moves away from a roller which drives the roll peripherally and wherein the sliver, being narrower than the roll, is applied to the roll in an undulating manner, the sliver passes to the roll via a conductor which is oscillated during roll-formation by coupling means directly connecting the conductor to the core. As shown, Fig. 1, sliver 1 from a doubler or like machine is directed by an oscillating conductor 7 through a sliver guide 9 onto a roller 11 whence it is wound onto a freelyrotatable wooden core 13 by means of driving rollers 11, 12. Core 13 rotates in bearings 19 which move along slides 21 as the size of the roll increases. The sliver is traversed across the width of the roll by the oscillation of conductor 7 ; this oscillation is effected about a pivot 67 by means of a follower 65 engaging the face of a cam 63 driven, through' change gears 57, 59 and chains 45, 33, from the shaft 17 of core 13. The sprockets engaging chains 45, 33 are carried by links 37, 39 which permit movement of core 13 along slides 21. Follower 65 is pressed against cam 63 by means of a spring 69. In an alternative arrangement, the cam follower is carried by a rocking lever connected by a link to the conductor. Conductor 7 may be replaced by a false twist tube similarly oscillated. Sliver guide 9 consists of a bush 87, Fig. 6, mounted on a shaft 83, and two end plates 89, engaging right and left hand threads on shaft 83, the spacing of which can be varied by turning shaft 83.
