Abstract

The methanesulphonic esters, 1 : 2-di- (methanesulphonoxy) - ethane, 1 : 3 - di - (methanesulphonoxy) - propane, 1 : 5 - di - (methanesulphonoxy) - pentane, b ,b 1 - di - (methanesulphonoxy) - diethyl ether and 1 : 6 - di - (methanesulphonoxy)-hexane, used for hardening gelatine, are made by reacting ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, pentanediol-1 : 5, diethylene glycol and hexamethylene glycol, respectively, with methanesulphonyl chloride in pyridine at 5 DEG to 15 DEG C.ALSO:In hardening gelatine, e.g. gelatine-silver halide photographic emulsions, at least 1 part by weight, preferably 10 parts, of a methane sulphonic ester having the formula CH3SO3-CH2-X-CH2-SO3CH3, wherein X is CH2-O-CH2 or (CH2)n and n is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, are added to each 620 parts of gelatine in aqueous solution. The following esters may be used:-1:2-di (methane sulphonoxy)-ethane, 1:3-di (methane sulphonoxy)-propane, 1:5-di (methane sulphonoxy)-pentane, b , b 1-di (methane sulphonoxy)-diethyl ether, 1:6-di (methane sulphonoxy)-hexane (see Group IV (b)). Formaldehyde or alum may also be added.
