Abstract

729,285. Surgical dressings. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. Oct. 16, 1953, No. 28670/53. Class 81 (2). A surgical dressing comprises a first layer of gauze not substantially less than 44/36 gauge, a second layer of absorbent cellulosic material, a third layer of absorbent multi-ply cellulose wadding, a fourth layer of water-repellent multi-ply cellulose wadding and a fifth layer of water-repellent fabric, the edges of the first and fifth layers being sealed together. The first layer 12 and the fifth layer 20 are sealed by stitching or by the use of a heat-sensitive adhesive composition. The second layer 14 is made of cotton waste e.g. cotton linters which may be mixed with cellulose pulp and has a thickness between and 1 inch. The third layer 16 is made from fifteen to thirty plies of high crepe tissue of relatively open formation. The fourth layer 18 is made from four to ten plies of high crepe tissue rendered waterrepellent. The fifth layer 20 is made of woven or non-woven fabric rendered water-repellent by impregnation with wax emulsion or other conventional treatment. The dressings are sufficiently large for only one to be required for covering the area to be treated and are held in place by bandaging.
